Abstract
The authors compared two groups of patients about the amount of blood loss and amount of autortansfusion and amount of homologous transfuion to evaluate the efficacy of intraoperative autotransfusion during the decompression and posterolateral
fusing
for lumbar stenosis using pedecle screws.
We experienced 81 patients who had operation for lumbar stenosis. Group I who received autotransfusion using Cell Savers by Hemonetics(U.S.A) included 36 patients, and group II as control group included 45 patients. In Group I, 12 male and 24
female,
mean age was 57.5 years. In Group II, 12 male and 33 female, mean age was 55 years. Average segment of decompression and fusion were 1.97 in Group I and 1.44 Group II.
Average volume of saved red cells was 870ml, and It's hematocrit was 31%. In Group I, added average homologous transfusion for l segment of fusion was 328.4ml in Group I which was 46% of Group II (713.3ml). There was no clotting abnormality, no
transfusion reaction and no thromboembolic disease in Group I.
Intraoperative autotransfusion using Hemoneties Cell Savers in operation for lumber stenosis was relatively safe unless the patients had infection or tumor. Intraoperative autotransfusion was an acceptable alternative to the homologous
transfusion
without untoward effect.
